Some conceived and delivered via treatment.

               Some has successful adoption.

               Some has separated.

I am here again just to wish all the TTCian who has succeeded no matter via which option.... i am so happy for you.

My Fault

A day leave on Christmas day gave me ample of time to think what actually went wrong and i've got my answer.

  1. Though my average Cycle Day is 33, the longest CD i've had for this year was 42. Means i do hv couple of days before actually i can say i am due.
  2. Using the opk doesnt really helped me to determine my peak days since it doesnt shows double line when i THOUGHT it should and i just ASSUME i ovulated on certain day.
  3. What actually happen was, i ovulated 6-7 days later than it should me so i actually missed those fertile periods. and thats when i got the faint line on pregnancy test.
    1. http://infertility.about.com/od/infertilitytreatments/a/What-Are-Gonadotropins.htm
  4. When i THOUGHT i ovulated, i discontinued to charting my BBT.
  5. Maybe i didnt ovulate at all
All the mistakes was from my side and i've been having unwanted stress for no reason. Actually i am just over excited to get pregnant naturally... thats it. nothing else.

CD38 today and when the AF arrive, i might be going to LPPKN again. Just that, i want to request for female doctor this time if possible. 3 years ago when i first started my treatment, Dr G was my only option. Now i may try my luck again.

Final Payment for Claims

Alhamdullillah, i've received the final claim payment for my primary infertility treatment today. I've received a total of RM6183.3 from Malaysian Government. Just paid the outstanding credit card which i've been using just for treatment at LPPKN. Settle satu hutang... lega~

Those out there who are working with Malaysian Goverment, you can claim your treatment fees if :-
  •  The treatment is done at any Government Hospital or LPPKN
  • Never pregnant before
  • Full payment for IUI
  • Payment for medicine if you have to go through IVF. The IVF procedure itself its not covered by the government.
More details at JPA website : Peraturan Permohonan Perbelanjaan Kemudahan Perubatan.
You have to pay first and claim later, please be remember that it will takes months to approve :)

On different note, most of insurance company doesnt cover infertility. Infertility treatment its really costly. Last time i heard about EPF wants to allow to take the Account 2 for infertility treatment but then im not sure whether its already been implemented or not. Those who have the savings in hand, doesnt mind about the cost.. but i do pity those who cant afford. Hopefully someone will look into this issue real soon.

"Setelah percubaan pertama gagal, kami mencuba sekali lagi  dan Alhamdulillah selepas tiga minggu kandungan, menerusi pengesanan ultrasound doktor mengesahkan isteri saya mengandung kembar empat." katanya.
"Memang jenuh jugalah apabila keempat-empat menangis serentak. Namun kami telah bersedia untuk keadaan ini."
"Malah kami juga mendapatkan khidmat dua orang pembantu untuk membantu menjaga anak kembar kami." ujurnya.
Tidak mahu meletakkan harapan terlalu tinggi ketika proses mengandung, Dr. Hazli dan Dr. Jasmina, hanya membelikan barangan bayi selepas kelahiran anak-anak bertuah itu.

IUI #1 vs IUI #2

Just want to share few things that happen/ I did during the first IUI and the 2nd.

1st IUI
2nd IUI
  • Very nervous
  • 3 good follicles
  • Went to loo just before the IUI procedure
  • DH's SA count 40 million
  • The IUI procedure was quite painful when the speculum was inserted
  • After the IUI, went to loo again
  • Went back home with motorbike
  • Took rest for the rest of the day
  • No intercourse after the IUI
  • BFN
  • Had my menses on 11dpiui
  • Started to take Evening Primerose Oil, Habatussauda and Goats Milk
  • 4 good follicles
  • Mentally prepared since its the 2nd IUI
  • DH's SA count 40 million
  • I was reciting the Doa Zakaria and Doa Yunus for the entire time i was in the lab
  • The IUI was less painful - i guess the Doa Yunus played the role
  • Didnt went to loo for 2 1/2 hours after the IUI
  • Went back home with cab
  • Took rest for the rest of the day
  • Had intercourse the next day of IUI to increase the chances
  • No period up to 16dpiui
  • BFP

I'm not sure which one has helped but thats what i can conclude on the differences on both IUI's.

14dpiui

Wow, finally reached the 14dpiui (the end of 2ww) for the first time in medicated cycle. All this while, i will have my menses when im in 9 or 10 dpo.Well, its just a 2 weeks wait of an IUI cycle and the wait is terrible. I wonder how those who had their embryo transfer and survive their 2ww.

fingers crossed
that everything will work out OK.

Surviving The Two Week Wait

Oh I must survive the 'Two Week Wait',
To see what will be, what is our fate.
It should not be bad, I'll keep busy with lots,
At least it's better than all those darn shots!

Day 1 I'll go for a nice calming walk,
And with my DH try not to talk
About kids and plans and names and such,
And try not to get our hopes up too too too much.

Day 2 Ahh, for today, I'll do some nice light cleaning,
And try not to think and keep myself from seeing,
Everyone around me with their cute babies,
And try to stop the incessant 'maybes'.

Day 3 with the In-Laws we'll dine,
Who don't know what's up, think everything is fine.
"No, thank you, I'll pass, I won't have the wine."
Stop looking at me, Mother-in-Law! No, it's not a sign!

Day 4 I'll look at my closet again,
Maybe a quick clean, then onto the den,
You know a crib would look great right over there,
Wait! Stop thinking about that, it just isn't fair!

Day 5, good grief! Will this day never end?
Where is my phone, can I call a friend?
And was that a twinge, or just anticipation?
Or am I one of those women who can actually feel implantation?

Day 6 I'm fine, I'm not going mad
But I keep looking at my dear husband, trying to see a Dad.
I have to keep busy, keep my mind occupied,
On trivial things, not what maybe happening inside!

Day 7, oh JOY, oh bliss, we are half way there!
No, I'm not obsessing, I haven't a care,
The first week flew by, I could hardly even tell,
And if you believe that I have a Bridge I can sell...

Day 8, Wait, are my breasts sore tonight?
Or, did I just wear my new bra too tight?
Am I feeling sick, nausea in the morning?
Or was that old expiration date actually a good warning?

Day 9, day 9, everything is fine!
Its not that I'm edgy, I SAID I WAS FINE!
Sorry, I did not mean to snap, but my temper is quick,
Is tomorrow too early to pee on a stick?

Day 10, For one day I'd just like to forget,
Not go crazy with days, my mind to reset.
A good friend she told me, "Remember, try not to dwell!"
Oh give me a break, this two weeks... umm, *Aint swell*!

Day 11, Well what to do, maybe I'll clean again?
Oops, my closet is empty and I blew up the den.
OK, I'll watch some TV to take my mind off the maybes
WHY DOES EVERY STATION ONLY PLAY "SHE'S HAVING A BABY?"

Day 12, good grief, I don't know how I will cope,
I want to be optimistic, to have some hope,
But I am afraid of disappointment, of again this not being the time,
If someone could make days fly, I'll give my last dime!

Day 13 is supposed to be Lucky, they say
Personally I wish it would just go away,
I am done with watching the days crawl by,
I hate all this waiting, too long have we tried.

Day 14, Wait, what? It's finally here?
Today we find out if a baby is near?
Umm, wait, now I don't know if I really want the real truth
I kind-of liked day-dreaming, but betas the proof!

So now it's off to the bathroom I go,
So far so good, I don't see Aunt Flow.
I open the package, pee and it will tell our fate,
Oh dear, now how do I survive this TWO MINUTE WAIT???

IUI #2

  200720111750

My last injection for this cycle, Pregnyl taken on Wednesday night.

IUI #2 went on smoothly. We are a bit late to clinic but happen to be just a perfect timing. I recite Nabi Yunus doa while waiting for the procedure and Alhamdullilah, this IUI was less painful then the first one. Everything was done in less than 5 minutes.

220720111751

(Ultrasound report as on 20th July 2011)

What i like about IUI? Of course the MC :)

Back home and took bed rest for the rest of the day. I had a bad cramping and stomach pain when im home. I believe its ovulation pain. Had that before when i had 8 good follicles last time. Although the scan shows only 4 mature follicles, there are another 2 possible follicle (16x13 and 11x16) which might already grew in the past 2 days and was released together with the 4 more follicles. This means, i had a total of 6 follicles this cycle.

I had a small strain after the IUI too… but only once and no more.

Back to normal today (1dpiui) and feeling good. No more cramping and stomach pain although the stomach is bloated.

Officially in 2ww again.

CD 14

Updates as of today (20/7/2011):

ET : 14mm (doctor said very good)
Left Ovary: out of 4 follicles, 2 follicles are good ( 17x14 and 21x14)
Right Ovary: Out of 5 follicles, 2 good follicles as well (21x15, 19x8)

Will be taking Pregnyl injection tonight (to release the eggs from the ovary)
IUI will be on 22nd July.

So much of effort, hope and prayers are been put for this cycle. We’ll see how it goes.
Positive or negative, I'll leave it to the Allah :)

CD13

My appointment was yesterday. As for CD12, i just had 1 follicle that are mature enough. So, doctor asked to go for another round of gonal-f. When i was about to get my medicine, u know what, gonal-f is out of stock!! The nurse says this year they have lots of patients and there is no more stock. Need to come again after 4pm.

My next appointment will be on Wednesday and if everything is according to the plan, the IUI #2 will be on coming Friday. Hope the holy Friday brings me luck for the long awaited little miracle.

Rambling

Last Sunday when me and DH went to movie, we had plenty of time before the movie starts. So had our dinner and start talking few things about this TTC. In early days of treatment, we use to go together to clinic but since his actual presence is only needed on the IUI day, I'll go alone.

Let him know that Monday morning i need to go to LPPKN. He kind of not interested. He said he’s lazy with this TTC thing. Try and try and no success. During the IUI #1, his SA count was 40 million. If we take 40 million as a minimum count, if BD was done for 3 time during the ovulation it will be 120 million. Yet, none of those met the little egg. Its frustrating. I don't know how to console him.

Deep down in my heart, i want to go for IVF straight without IUI anymore. But, doctor at LPPKN doesn't allow IVF with just 1 IUI. Though i am so scared about IVF. How if its fails too? I’ve been reading a fair share of success and failed IVF stories. It hurts, although it is other person’s story. At the same time, really hoping for the IUI #2 to success. Prayers needed my dear friends.

(Pic source: Indah Khairani)

I find myself hopeful one day and depressed and beat down the next. Help me ya Allah! Sometimes i wonder if i was never made to conceive. This thought will always come and go regularly since in this 4.5 yrs, we failed to produced any single baby, not even miscarriage/ectopic/molar and what so ever. No... im not praying to have miscarriage/ectopic/molar its just the thought of not able to "make babies" that haunt me.

CD21 @ 10dpo

Tired

I had spotting last Thursday on CD22. I called the clinic and asked can i consider it as period or not because its still early and my cycle usually 28-31 days. Nurse just put me on appointment on the following day and the doctor asked me to consider it as period and sent me home with lots of Gonal-f injection.

My instinct says that its not period. Recently my period gone mad. It doesn't follow the typical rule anymore. It will start, then stop after few days then will be getting spotting for another few days and stop again and then followed by the actual menses. This is why i happen to missed the appointment to meet doctor after my failed IUI.

I’ve started my clomid on Saturday and injection the following day. But the spotting last for 4 days and then it stops.  No normal flow at all and my period never end in 4 days before.. Doctor said the IUI #2 will be on 27 June. I told him that I'm not going to do IUI this cycle since I will be away next week and i wont be able to undergo lab treatment. I want to go for time intercourse and he agreed.

Again, my instinct says, next Monday I'll be having my ‘actual’ period!

On different note, I've been having gastric and diarrhea for 5 days now since the spotting started. DH checking with me whether I'm ok regularly during the night. Yesterday on MC and today back to work.

I am so tired!

Happy

So happy today coz the claimed that been pending since last year, finallygot it today. Submit the application end of last year and it was rejected. Submit again on February and received it today. It took 4 months to process with all the documentation right in place. Apa nak jadi ntah! I have not submitted the 2nd claim yet. So, will be getting it only end of the year i guess.

By the way, what im going to do with the money?

Option 1

My initial plan was, to keep it aside for my treatments. But then, yesterday came to know this particular auction house, near my parents house which is damn below the market price. Need to pay 5% if we are ok with the house. I knew the area and its very demanded place. So, thinking to invest in that.

Option 2

On the other hand, DH was not so interested with the holiday plan for next month for few reasons. One of the main reason was the tight budget. So, should i spend on this holiday trip then? Its a place which i’ve been dreaming to visit since my childhood days. According to DH, he asked me to cancel the trip and his going to pay me back the ticket price.

Overall, if the holiday trip did cancel at the end, will be getting additional money for the option no 1. But am i really into going to buy the house? Its another different story :p

Short Break

Went to RE today morning, and the doctor said i am too late for the treatment for this cycle. So it might be a waste if we continue with treatment since the outcome is already known.

Its my mistake to not called on last Friday when AF just arrived. I forgot to call for an appointment on Monday due to my work and only manage to call on Tuesday and got the appointment on Thursday (today) CD 7.

So, I'm on break this cycle. So only continue with the folic acid.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Treatment Cost

The total amount that i paid for this cycle was RM1253.80. So, so far I've spent RM4045.5 at LPPKN alone.

lp

I'm not sure yet on the previous claim status. Now I'm going to submit the new one. Well, just use the facilities that available for government staff right? Hope it will be approved soon.

IUI

What is IUI?
IUI stands for intrauterine insemination and involves depositing sperm into a woman’s uterus in the hopes of facilitating conception. It is one of four methods that fall under the umbrella term of artificial insemination. Other artificial insemination methods include intracervical insemination, intratubal insemination and intrafollicular insemination. Of the four techniques, IUI is by far the most often used.

How is IUI done?
IUI is a relatively simple procedure that takes little time to perform. During IUI, a catheter is passed through the cervix, into the uterus. Contained within the catheter are sperm, which are injected into the uterus. The whole procedure may take only a few minutes.

When and where are sperm collected?
Sperm can be collected either at home, if you live close to your fertility clinic, or at the doctor’s office. The man will be provided with a sterile collection cup, where he can deposit his ejaculate. If you plan on using a fresh sample, then this sample needs to be delivered to your fertility doctor within a half hour of ejaculation. In some cases, a special type of condom may also be used for sperm collection.

Does sperm need to be prepared before IUI?
Yes, sperm washing must occur before IUI can happen. This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes with simple sperm wash to two hours with the swim up technique. Insemination should occur shortly after the sperm has been prepared.

IUI(Source: Google)

Should IUI be done before or after I ovulate?
In general, it is usually recommended to do IUI just before ovulation is set to take place. Six hours is often the time frame given as washed sperm doesn’t live much beyond six to 12 hours. However, if your infertility problems are caused by male factor, insemination is more likely to take place within six hours after ovulation.

If you have not been using any fertility drugs during your cycle, then detecting ovulation will depend upon detecting the LH surge. Cycles using a single IUI are normally done 24 to 36 hours after the surge is detected while those having two IUIs done will be inseminated between 12 and 48 hours after the surge. If you have been using fertility drugs, like Clomid, to produce multiple egg follicles and are having a single IUI done, then insemination will take place 24 to 36 hours after you receive an hCG injection. Women having two IUIs done in the same cycle will be inseminated 24 to 48 hours after receiving the hCG injection with 12 hours between each IUI.

Is a certain sperm count necessary for IUI?
Although the minimum sperm count necessary to have an IUI performed is one million, it is normally recommended that a sperm count of at least 5 million be used. However, the less sperm that is used, the lower the chances of success. Therefore, a sperm count between 20 and 30 million is usually thought of as ideal.

Is IUI painful?
Although it can cause some discomfort, mainly when the catheter is passed through the cervix, overall IUI is a relatively painless procedure. Some women have likened it to a pap smear in terms of discomfort.

Will I be successful with IUI the first time?
Like IVF, a few cycles of IUI may be necessary before you are successful. Many fertility doctors recommend doing two inseminations at a time in order to increase your chances of pregnancy. Using different fertility drugs also may help. However, if you fail to have any results after trying a few cycles with both Clomid and injectable fertility drugs, you may want to consider trying IVF.

How successful is IUI?
Natural IUIs, meaning that no fertility drugs were used, tend to have lower success rates, dipping down to about 6% in some cases. However, IUIs done with fertility drugs that produce multiple eggs have success rates of up to 30% associated with them. Additionally, sperm count greatly affects the outcome with IUI. Using sperm samples with a smaller count often cause a couple to have less success. Overall, though, a success rate of 15% to 20% is associated with IUI.

How soon after IUI can I take a pregnancy test?
It is a good idea to wait at least a week, if not two, before taking a pregnancy test. Implantation can take anywhere from six to 12 days after ovulation to occur. Therefore it is best to wait two weeks after the procedure before testing (if you can).

Are there any risks associated with IUI?
IUI is one of the least stressful fertility treatments on a woman’s body, especially if she is not taking any fertility drugs. It also has very few associated risks, although cramping, bleeding or spotting may occur during or after the procedure. There is also a risk of infection, including STDs, particularly if the sperm you are using has not been properly screened and/or you are not very familiar with the health background of the sperm provider.

Women using fertility drugs do have a few more risks to worry about, which are particular to the medications they are receiving. However, with proper and regular monitoring, these risks should be minimized.

Is there anything I should do or avoid after IUI?

  • Feel free to get up and move about after IUI as your cervix will close, keeping the newly deposited sperm right where it should be. However, many women prefer to continue lying down immediately after the procedure, which your doctor will likely encourage as well.
  • While it won’t hurt you to take it easy for a few days, there really is no reason why you can’t resume your regular activities right away.
  • Have sex. This will only help to increase your chances of conceiving, after all. However, if you experienced any bleeding during your IUI procedure, you may want to wait 48 hours before having sex.
  • Wondering whether or not you can swim? While it hasn’t been shown to interfere with IUI, there’s nothing wrong with being prudent in your actions and waiting a couple of days to swim. If you are using suppository medications, though, you may want to ask your fertility doctor whether swimming will interfere with these medications.

Little Updates

My friend agreed to inject me last Wednesday although she was so nervous. Went for an ultrasound today and it seems that i do have some good follicles… 3 good follies (17mm, 16mm, 18mm) and few others ranging 14-15mm.

So, i was given another round of Gonal-f (my new injectables for this cycle) 150iu this morning and i am scheduled for an IUI coming Monday. Need to take the Pregnyl trigger tomorrow night. Im very the worried and this gonna be my first IUI.

Infertility: Islamic Perspective – 3 ; Male doctor

I was always curious and guilty about is it still allowed to engage with a male doctor for ttc related matters. Although i asked for the female doc, i couldn't get since lack of female doctors. When i was looking for some other information, i found this.

“If there is a legal reason for the woman to be exposed to a person other than her husband for treatment, that person should be a Muslim woman if there is one who can do the job; if not found, then a non-Muslim woman; if not found then a trustworthy Muslim doctor; if not found then a non-Muslim doctor. This is the legal sequence. It is unlawful for the patient woman to stay alone with an alien male doctor. Her husband or another woman should be with them. The council also states that: "the need of the married woman as well as her husband to have a child is a sound reason and a legal one that makes lawful for this woman to seek treatment in the lawful way of artificial insemination.”.

So womans out there… dont feel guilty if you have to deal with male doctor as long the doctor is Muslim and when the treatment was being done, always been accompanied by nurse or your husband. Feeling the real relieved now!

CD 2

Its CD 2 today and called LPPKN for an appointment. The nurse said the lab is still not ready and its better for me to proceed next cycle. The last medicated cycle was back in November. Obstacles came in so many ways… even in getting treatment? How to take it positively in this situation? Allah asking me to wait?

Infertility: Islamic Perspective – 2 : Treatments that allowed!

In the previous edition, we presented Imaan's story in the struggle to conceive as well as various lessons that can be learned through such experiences. In this article, we will outline several issues that infertile couples often encounter, along with an Islamic perspective on each of these. It is important to point out that attempting to cure infertility is not only permissible, but may be a duty for the couple since procreation and preservation of the human race are principal goals in marriage. The treatment itself, however, should never go beyond the boundaries of what is permissible by Allaah. The ends do not always justify the means, and in the case of infertility, this principle should be readily apparent.

Allaah Almighty Says what means: “And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship...” [Quran 46: 15]

Choice of procedures

In today's world of medical technology and advancement, there are many options available for couples who are struggling with infertility. Unfortunately, many of these options are morally and religiously unacceptable. Muslims need to be aware of the procedures that are allowed in Islam and those that are not. In general, it is easy to remember that any procedure that makes use of sperm or eggs that do not belong to the husband or wife is absolutely unacceptable in Islam. This would entail making use of what is commonly termed donor eggs or donor sperm. The obvious reasons for their prohibition is that they involve mixing of lineage, confusion as to who the real parents are and, in reality, an illegitimate child. The virtue of preserving genealogy is evident in the Quran. Allaah Almighty Says what means: " And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation]." [Quran 25: 54]

Two permissible methods are as follows:

1)      IUI (Intra-Uterine Insemination) wherein the sperm of the husband is taken and injected into a suitable place in the cervix or womb of the wife so that fertilization can take place internally, and
2)      IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) wherein the sperm is taken from the husband, and an egg is taken from the wife. Fertilization is done externally, and then the embryo is implanted in the womb of the wife. IUI is often used when the husband has low sperm count, or has normal sperm but is unable to deposit them in the genital tract for some reason. IVF may be used when there is some type of obstruction preventing access of the sperm to the ovum, which could occur in cases where one or both fallopian tubes are blocked and cannot be corrected by surgery.

An important issue to consider with IVF is that there a strong likelihood that not all of the fertilized eggs will be placed into the uterus. The goal of an IVF cycle is to harvest 15-20 eggs. Not all of these will fertilize successfully, but usually more than two or three will (which is the standard number implanted into the woman). This leaves the parents with two choices:
1)      Discard the remaining embryos or
2)      Freeze these embryos for future use (it would not be allowed to donate these for other couples). This issue leads to several questions, "Does a fertilized egg constitute a child, thereby making the act of discarding it Haraam?  Is this a form of abortion? Most scholars have used the following definition of abortion, "Abortion means to terminate the life of the fetus deliberately, by any means, while it is still in the womb of the mother." The debate regarding abortion centers around the definition of fetus and not the womb, and so it would not apply to the IVF process since the fertilized egg is not in the womb.

It is necessary to note that this type of procedure is only permitted within the marriage contract, which is broken by death or divorce. If the husband dies, for example, the woman is not allowed to make use of these stored embryos since there is no longer a marital bond. She is, in fact, able to marry another man after the waiting period is completed. A child conceived in this situation would be denied its right to legitimacy.

Multi-Fetal Reduction

Another debatable issue is the use of multi-fetal reduction (terminating one or more of the embryos after implantation) which may arise when a woman becomes fertilized with more than one or two embryos. Scholars are in disagreement on this particular point. Some state its permissibility due to the medical risk for the mother, and others do not, basing their opinion upon the definition of abortion. It then becomes a decision that must be made between husband and wife with reliance upon their own thoughts and feelings about this issue after trusting in Allaah and seeking His Guidance.

Imaan related that this type of phenomenon is rare since most clinics implant only two or three embryos at one time. This is likely to become the norm as clinics continue to develop standards to minimize the risks for mothers and their unborn fetuses. The issue of multi-fetal reduction will eventually lose its relevance as times goes on.

Surrogate motherhood

In recent years a new approach to infertility has developed that has sparked debates regarding its acceptability, legality and morality.

Surrogate motherhood or surrogate parenting involves making use of another woman's womb to bear a child for a couple who is having difficulty conceiving. This is most commonly used when a woman is unable to bear children due to blocked fallopian tubes or an absent or defective uterus. In one method, the surrogate mother is impregnated by the husband's semen, which, as outlined above, would be completely unacceptable in Islam. In another method, fertilization is completed externally between the sperm and egg of the couple and then the embryo is placed in the uterus of a woman who volunteers or is paid to carry it. The questions that then arise are "Who is the real mother of this child?", "Is the mother the one who contributed the genes or the one who bore and gave birth to the child?" This separation of the womb relation from the ovary relationship is a new phenomenon and lies at the center of the debate regarding surrogation. Various conclusions have been reached, but what is the Islamic perspective on this option?

Throughout the Quran, there are many references to the concept of motherhood. We find the following as examples. Allaah Almighty Says what mean:

"…Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them..." [Quran 58:2]

"And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months..." [Quran 46: 15]

"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination." [Quran 31:14]

In the Arabic language the term that is used for parents is derived from the verb "Wilaada" which means to give birth. "Waalid" is the father and "Waalidah" is the mother. Both parents are "Waalidaan." We are related to both the ovary and the womb of our mother, but the references in the Quran clearly emphasize the womb relation by stating that mothers are those who gave birth to us. The womb or uterus is "Rahim" ("Arhom" is the' plural) in Arabic and refers to a "value" based on relatives and the tie of compassion that binds them. "Rahmah" is another derivative, which means compassion.

Allaah Almighty Says what means: "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allaah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allaah is ever, over you, an Observer.." [Quran 4: 1]

"So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?" [Quran 47: 22]

So, again, we see the significance of the womb relationship and the understanding that the one who gives birth is the mother of the child. A child born under a surrogate contract would be illegitimate in Islamic law since the husband had not entered into a marital contract with the surrogate mother. Even if the surrogate mother were another wife of the husband, it would still not be allowed since this entails introducing a foreign egg, which is outside the marriage contract binding the husband and his second wife.

In addition to all of this, the contract entered into through surrogation would be considered Baatil (invalid) since it involves the "sale" of a free person. Some final points to consider are the evils that may result from this type of contract such as: reducing motherhood to a price, undermining the institution of marriage and family life, creating confusion in blood ties, encouraging surrogate mothers to claim legal rights to the child, and tampering with the Sunan of Allaah in the normal process of procreation.

Inshaa` Allaah (Allaah willing), we will all be guided to the truth and to those actions that are within the limits of Allaah's Law and which deserve Allaah's Pleasure. May Allaah bestow upon those who desire the role of mother or father from His bounties, for parenthood is truly a blessing that warrants gratitude and prostration to the Creator each and every day.
